A word about packages with rates that are too good to be true. If you are questioning an offer you find for a cruise/stay package at unbeliveable rates, don't believe it. Visit our message boards to learn about these scams from folks who see them occur every day. Most will not give you some very important information that is a part of the cost. These packages do not include per person, per night government taxes that the hotels must levy. They also don't include round trip transfers which are at least $25 each way between dock and hotel. If you are on a budget you probably want to stay at a hotel that is walking distance to most main attractions or at least offers public transportation or prearranged transportation. Most frequently these packages are for hotels that are not on the bus line, require expensive taxi rides to the main attractions, restaurants etc. While the hotel or motel may be quite adequate, if you are on a budget the added expense of either a car rental or taxis will make this package price expand. If the representative does not know or says merely they offer a shuttle to the beach, investigate. That is not good enough unless the only place you plan upon going is the beach. Most tour operators will pick you up but only a handful of restaurants do. Port charges are another frequently undisclosed expense. Or better yet an inflated figure is offered to add in some profit. The port charges Discovery discloses (last checked August 2002 - is subject to change but would not expect elaborate change) is $49 per person and departure tax is $13 per person. If you are wary of the deal being offered get some advice prior to taking out your credit card or sending in payment.
